A huge number of birds migrate through the SF Bay area, particularly during the winter. To give the migrants peace and quiet, the sanctuary area is closed to boat traffic from October 1st until March 31st.
The boundary is marked by a series of about six concrete pylons with red bands. If you get lost in fog, these markers can get you across Richardson Bay.
