The first rule of boat etiquette is "the bigger boat has the right of way", and the ferry is bigger than a shell. The captains of the ferry are generally very courteous, and they certainly don't want to hit a boat. However, courteous rowers don't come close to the ferry either.
On week days the ferry leaves Sausalito at 7:10, 8:20, and 10:55 in the mornings.
On Saturday, Sunday, and holidays the ferry leaves at 11:20.
The ferry typically arrives 20 minutes before leaving.
If you need to get past the ferry and you think it may leave soon you can sneak around the bow, rowing under the gangplank. Two other ferry companies, "Blue & Gold" and "Red & White", also use this dock, but typically once or twice a day late in the morning.
