--- end of year 2005 ---
December 23: The heavy rains of the last week and high tides (on December 31 we will have the highest tide of the year) combine to wash an alarming collection of wood and other floating objects into the Bay. The density is highest off Stawberry and Pickelweed (Mill Valley) Creek and in Raccoon Strait during the ebb tide. However, there is trash floating almost everywhere. Look behind you often, and if you run into a patch slow down to avoid damage to your (our) boat.
December 11: The herring season has apparently started (I saw 3 boats fishing off Oldtown tonight). As more boats (picture) show up in Sausalito the traffic up and down the main channel will increase, so be careful. If you row down the Sausalito coast to Yellow Bluff you are likely to encounter anchored boats that are fishing. Stay at least 50 m from boats and be on the outlook for nets in the water (marked by small buoys which are sometimes not easily seen from a shell).

June 15 a mishap: One of our members was rowing down the East side of Angel Island, crossing China Cove. It was early morning and the reflection of the sun on the water made it difficult to see ahead. Unfortunately the rower collided with a anchored sailboat. Fortunately the shore was close and the rower beached the shell just as it sank. Fortunately someone on the sailboat had a cell phone and Tim Sell used List Marine's boat Smoky, to make the rescue. Fortunately Maas was able to attach a new bow to the shell (they did a great job, you can't find the joint). The take home lesson is that this could happen to anyone. Sometimes there are a lot of boats around Angel Island, now that the fishing season has started. We have to discipline ourselves to periodically look ahead of the boat even when we "know" that there isn't anything there. Be careful in the boat channel to distinguish between boats that are anchored and those that are under way.

This brigantine is anchored a few hundred meters South of the Sausalito ferry terminal. It was here last year and a Google search then reported that "it's run as a training ship for youth by The Sail Training Association of Japan". It was first commisioned by the Polish Sail Training Association and launched in 1990. However, the www site now seems to be lost? A crew member said they plan to sail to the Southern California area at the end of July to join other ships in maneuvers They are looking for funding, and hope to return to Sausalito later in the year.

January 27 It started out a little questionable, with only a handful of us rowing on New Year's Day. But one intrepid group (2 singles and a double) made it out to the Golden Gate Bridge. Another group (maybe the smarter one) went the other way, to the bridge over Highway 101 towards Mill Valley. The year was launched.
And since that day? Well, it's mostly been wet and cold.
The most dedicated rower this month has been a new club member who lives on a sailboat in the bay, kayaks in to the beach, and takes out a shell. Three boats a day . . .
So what do we do? Make plans, of course. Our annual regatta is set for Sunday, April 10, 2005. We need rowers, dock hands, safety boats, a picnic crew -- everyone is welcome to help us celebrate the 20th anniversary of OWRC.
